Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for Innovations at HBCUs: Transdisciplinary approach to address food and nutrition security

Can we achieve a Zero Hunger World, where every child has access to safe, nutritious food? In this workshop hosted by AAAS- HBCU’s Making & Innovation Showcase, audience was exposed to hidden hunger, affecting 2 billion people around the world.  The COVID pandemic has exposed the social disparities in the world, affecting the vulnerable groups with hunger, malnutrition, disproportionately affecting women and children. Dr. Kiruba Krishnaswamy shared her journey from India, Canada, Kenya, and the USA. Stories that inspired her to dedicate her career addressing food and nutrition security. She provided a brief overview about her FEAST program (www.feastlab.org) and how she integrates research, teaching and outreach activities supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 2- Zero Hunger). Dr. Krishnaswamy will discuss about a new transdisciplinary online course, ‘Zero Hunger Challenge’ to create multi-disciplinary student teams and help them compete at global challenge competitions. Overall, this workshop provided insights about the interconnected challenges of food and nutrition security, connecting two or more SDG’s (need for SDG-17: Partnerships for the Goals) to address grand challenges and to imagine a zero-hunger world!

Dr. Kiruba Krishnaswamy is an assistant professor, with MU Pillar of Pursuit- Food Sustainability, joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical, Biological and Chemical Engineering and the Division of Food, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at the University of Missouri (MU). She has international experience with food and nutrition security projects, connecting post-harvest processing (upcycling food loss/waste) and micronutrient food fortification. She was inducted into the Institute of Food Technologist (IFT) Emerging Leaders Network 2018 and served on the Global Leverage Task Force - to strengthen partnerships between IFT Foundation “Feeding Tomorrow” and Engineering for Change (E4C). Dr. Krishnaswamy initiated the membership between University of Missouri (UM) and the United Nations Academic Impacts (UNAI), serves as UM liaisons to UNAI supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2 & 17) to address Zero Hunger.
