The Ins and Outs of Technology Transfer at HBCUs

HBCUs are developing leading discoveries and innovations in today's top STEM industries. This webinar, led by Dr. Laura Collins, Director of North Carolina A&T State University’s Office of Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization will help attendees learn how universities protect inventions developed at their institution and move the innovations to market via licensing with established companies or facilitating establishment of cutting edge new businesses. The audience will learn about the benefits of university technology transfer as well as recommendations for working with the Tech Transfer office on your campus and what you can do if your campus does not have a Tech Transfer office.

Laura Collins, Director at NC A&T State University

Laura is the Director of IP Development and Commercialization at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and is responsible for A&T’s IP portfolio and technology transfer operations. In her 11 years as the university’s patent agent, the number of patents from campus research has grown from 11 to over 45. In the 4 year she has been responsible for licensing, the university’s cumulative licensing revenue has increased by over 50%. Before coming to A&T, Laura spent 10 years with an Intellectual Property law group in San Diego, supporting patent prosecution, patent litigation, inventorship investigations and prior art landscaping. She has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from UNC Chapel Hill and undergraduate degrees in Chemistry with Honors and History from Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia.
